While attending a longer childbirth class series can't
guarantee that you will have the birth you want, it can make you better prepared
to handle those unexpected outcomes that sometimes happen. Research shows
that women who are included in the decision making process during their labors
will have a more positive view of labor, even if labor doesn't go as planned.
A longer class series will allow more time to be spent on childbirth choices,
helping you to become better prepared to take an active role in your childbirth
experience.
For first time parents, the International Childbirth
Education Association recommends a childbirth class with a minimum of
six-sessions and a maximum of 6 couples. Currently, my class is the only
one in the Erie area that meets these minimum requirements. Research shows that when a class is spread out over a number of weeks,
versus crammed into one or two sessions, results in a better retention of material.
When you think about how much time you've spent researching the best car seat, crib, and
stroller, it helps put the commitment into perspective. In 30 years you
won't be able to recall the brand name of the stroller you bought, but you will
remember your birth experience.
From personal experience, I can tell you that spending a
few extra weeks in class is worth every minute. I took a 12-week class,
and found that I knew so much more about labor and the benefits and risks of
options that were available to me versus my friends who opted for a shorter
class series.
Invest in a 6-week class. You'll be glad you did.
